WHAT

You know one when you see one, and it just is. I love when a design, as a whole, comes together to make one solid harmonious machine, sort of speak. My experience with good design is that it is full of emotion. It picks you up and takes you on a journey: one where you the observer feels part of the action and goes in and out as a witness and voulenteer.

To me… the truly skilled artist will create a subject or piece of art that is interactive. One that engages the viewer and sends them off down a path. This path can be mental, by sparking trains of thought that suggests you to wonder, question or remember. It can be emotional when the viewer feels the art, and participates as the art holds a space for the viewer to interact with. Art has the power to change and influence the world around it.

A skilled artist knows the capabilities of art, for good and bad. One who yields and expresses thru a medium needs to be accountable for their creations.

WHY

I first handedly experienced the power of perspective when flying a drone… I realized the care and softness needed in order to give a pleasant view and shot. When the drone rotated abruptly or moved too quickly to video was uneasy to follow and almost violent at parts. It wasn’t until I reviewed the videos on my computer that I understood the importance of how I handle the drone and its impact on the experience of the one viewing the film. The next flight I took was exciting, as I connected all three movement of the drone simultaneously and fluidly.

The way I imagined flying the drone, after knowing I needed 2 be gentler, is as if I was caring someones head. Yes, their head. lol. Funny as it seems, but this was helpful 4 I tuned into what speed I wanted to take the viewer on at different parts of the journey. I felt into what I was shooting and how that subject would best be exposed. Crazy as it seems, but in a metaphorical way we are all being carried by the one who hold the camera: the way they move, turn, walk, run, drop or scan has a direct effect on how we interpret and experience the film.

HOW

Now let’s take a leap from shooting and creating a film to the simple task of watching a movie. The goal is to “see the whole”. First, one needs to reframe from attaching to one side of the story or a certain characters perspective. Its easy to agree with the good guy… When watching we are looking and listening for subtle clues or hints that the actor or filmmaker left in the scene to plant little seed or foreshadow to what is next. This foreshadowing can be seen in voice and tone, or be done thru an action. Body language and costume design plays a big part too. This is pertains to the scenery and location: background and foreground. By knowing a little about emotive design; one understands the feeling associated with certain colors. The big idea here is that everything that you see or hear in the film (if crafted correctly) is there intentionally. If it’s there, there’s a reason.

This is just the beginning on how to start interactively watching movies and film. For me, this method was obvious. I have a great thirst for quality design and high production movies. The investigative role is one that I put on whenever watching a film. Allow your imagination to soar as you interact with the creations around you. Have some fun, by thinking and looking outside the box…
